Each and every child is entitled to Protection by the State - protection from exploitation, abuse, neglect.

UNICEF uses the term CHILD PROTECTION to refer to preventing and responding to violence to exploitation and abuse against children –including commercial sexual exploitation ,trafficking ,child labor and harmful traditional practices , such as female genital mutilation or cutting and child marriage.

The United Nation’s Convention on The Rights of the Child stipulates very clearly that each and every child in this world is entitled to States Protection but in reality much work is yet to be accomplished by Governments and NGO’s around the world to ensure the global safety of all children.

Children in need of protection in Thailand are:

  • Children from families living below poverty line ( 10% of the population)

  • Physical mental and sexual abused children living with their families

  • Thai children being sold and trafficked for commercial sex

  • Children from neighboring countries trafficked into Thailand for work and sex

  • Children suffering from violence in the Southern part of Thailand

  • Children exploited to work a beggars , flower sellers or any other type of labor

  • Children being held in Juvenile detention centers (approx 29,000)

  • Children being held in adult detention center (approx 1000) due to lack of facility

  • Children not registered at birth (5% per year)

At least the Child’s Rights to Protection is well stipulated by The United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of a Child and well accepted by most Governments but the work that lies ahead in Child Protection is enormous. For NGO”s and Governments alike. The following are the Rights to Protection to which Childline Thailand abides by and must be worked relentlessly for by all parties concerned:

  • The Right to be born
  • The Right to equality
  • The Right to Protection against exploitation and abuse
  • The Right to Protection of privacy
  • The Right to Protection from work that threatens health education and development
  • The Right to Protection from drug abuses
  • The Right to Protection for a child without family
  • The Right to protection of privacy
